The Car is not going anywhere. It is time we started to accept the position of Cars in our midst as a considerable part of our Urban Environment. But the real question is how much of importance do we offer to it in relation to people and its intrusion of our associations with our Urban Environment. This is also integral for any new or progressive modes of mobility and the infrastructure mankind might invent. The Lab chose to investigate the various urban associations we have around our own School of Planning and Architecture (Graduate and Undergraduate) campuses as the predominant anchors on the edges, the Vikas Minar Tower and various institutional bodies in between. Can we create an Urban Institutional District? What is the role of the car in shaping such a district? Any serious disruption to the functioning of a community and city at any scale can be traced
back due to Disasters which lead to human, material, economic and environmental losses
and impacts. It changes the image of environment (both man-made and natural) in that
particular time and space and lives as an episodic memory in our conscious.
The effect of disaster can be immediate and localized but it is often widespread and could
last for long period of time which has high degree of association value to humans and their
everyday lives. For instance, the image of the black cloud of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
retained in our memory for over four decades.
The disaster is precursor to transformation where people either endure or let the
transformation take over. What existed prior to a disaster can also be mined back by people
in some cases. For instance, People in Patan Square, Kathmandu Valley, Nepal were able
to restore their Durbar square due to pre recorded documentation and living memory of the
structures in their conscious.
Disaster is an important tool to understand the transformation of various segments of the
built and Un-built fabric of our world which can give an idea of advancement of society by
bearing all the loss came across it.
Post disaster, there might be shift in perception towards betterment of their quality of life.
Human excellence and abilities have always challenged/ prolonged and even mitigated
disasters. While post-traumatic stress lingers on, change remains a permanent constant
throughout the phases of post disaster transformative scenarios.
